Hedgehogs Cottage

Location

Glenrothes, Scotland

Description

Hedgehogs Cottage is more than just a holiday home—it’s a place designed with understanding, care, and comfort at its heart. Nestled in a peaceful setting on the edge of Glenrothes, this charming, semi-detached cottage offers families a calm and welcoming space to truly relax, recharge, and feel at ease.

Created with neurodivergent families in mind, Hedgehogs Cottage has been thoughtfully adapted by an owner with lived experience of autism. Every detail reflects a genuine understanding of the challenges families can face when travelling, helping to create an environment where both children and parents can feel safe, supported, and comfortable.

The cottage’s spacious single-storey layout provides a simple, accessible environment with minimal barriers—ideal for reducing stress and supporting independence. The open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area offers a flexible space where families can stay connected, while a partition in the sitting room allows for separation when a quieter, lower-stimulation area is needed.

Inside, additional safety and reassurance features have been carefully included to support a range of needs and give parents added peace of mind.

Exciting plans are underway to further develop the outdoor space into a rich sensory environment, designed to support both sensory-seeking children and those who benefit from calmer, more regulated experiences.

Surrounded by woodland and countryside, the cottage also offers gated access to a peaceful nature walk—perfect for gentle adventures in a quiet, natural setting. Things you may need to know

Every autistic person is unique, and while some may require additional accommodations such as lockable windows and doors, others may not. For this reason, we provide detailed property information to help families with autistic children make informed decisions based on their individual needs.

We understand that choosing the right holiday environment is so important, especially when considering the individual needs of your child. At Hedgehogs Cottage, every effort has been made to create a welcoming and understanding space, and we want to share a few points to help you feel confident in deciding whether it’s the right fit for your family.

Hedgehogs Cottage is a semi-detached property and is attached to the owner’s home. There is a connecting door, which is always kept locked, and your privacy is fully respected throughout your stay. The owner has lived experience of autism and truly understands the importance of feeling comfortable, accepted, and not judged. Families can feel reassured that children can be themselves here without worry about noise or behaviours.

The cottage is set within what is essentially a light industrial area. While this may sound unusual, the nearby businesses are generally quiet and do not tend to cause disruption. There is also a high wood panel fencing and a large gate to the front of the property that hides most of that area. That said, the surroundings may feel a little different from a typical countryside or residential holiday setting, and this is something some families may wish to consider.

The outdoor space is one of the cottage’s most special features, offering lots of room to move, play, and explore. The full 1.6 acres of land is securely enclosed by a six-foot-high fence, providing a greater level of reassurance for many families. However, as with any large outdoor space, some children may still find the openness stimulating, particularly if they are prone to wandering, so supervision may still be important depending on individual needs.

From June, two goats will also be joining Hedgehogs Cottage. For many children this can be a lovely and calming experience for many children

The wider site itself is gated and locked each evening, adding an extra layer of security and reassurance. Guests are given access details so they can continue to come and go as they need.

We know that new places can sometimes bring unexpected changes in routine, sights, or sounds. If you have any questions at all or would like to talk through whether Hedgehogs Cottage will suit your child’s needs, you are very welcome to get in touch—we are always happy to help.
